Why Resolutions Don’t Work

This week for New Years Eve the whole world typically makes some sort of New Years Resolution. “I want to lose weight.” “I’m going to make more money.” “I’m going to stop smoking in 2011.”

So why do over 80% of New Years Resolutions fail?

I believe that when people make resolutions they do nothing more than make a wish. They determine what they want and that is it. They don’t think it through, develop a plan or follow through and it quickly is forgotten.

If you want to move beyond New Years Resolutions and begin to achieve goals – you need to set True Goals. True Goals have three things: Vision, Mission & Strategy.
Vision paints the picture – answering What?
Mission provides the purpose – answering Why?
Strategy provides the plan – answering How?

A true goal is like travel plans. You have your destination determined, your estimated time of arrival and your route on how to get there. Sure there might be detours along the way – but you are moving way beyond a wish when you set a true goal and increasing your odds dramatically of achieving your resolutions.

This year – make true goals instead of resolutions and make 2011 the best year of your life!
