The Best in the World

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were a kid? Was it an astronaut, a baseball player, a fireman, chef, writer, actor, lawyer or a doctor? Regardless of what profession you chose, there is a common element to childhood dreams: Every child dreams of being “The Best in the World.” Think about it – you didn’t dream about being a casual, better than average basketball player. You dreamed about being in the NBA and winning a world championship. You didn’t dream about being a writer whose book never got published. You dreamed of writing the best-selling book of all time. Children dream big, and don’t see past their goal to envision all the work it will take to get there – they just dream. But somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we lose the “best in the world” part of our dreams and settle for the “that’s

The Belief of A Young Marine

I have a good friend named John Whittaker who is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps. He told me a story that illustrates the power of beliefs and how they dictate and drive our actions, and it is a story that I have never been able to forget. He says. “When I was in the Marines I decided to go to Jump School to learn how to parachute out of airplanes. Interestingly, the government sends Marines to Fort Benning, Georgia to an Army Jump School. One night everyone was out at the bar having a few drinks and one marine bumped into an army ranger and spilled his beer. Words were exchanged and they squared off and began to fight. The marine was a lot smaller than the ranger and for the first two rounds of the fight it looked like the marine had no chance. But then

Are We Doing It To Ourselves?

I have a confession – when I was 12 years old, I wanted to be a magician. A couple weeks ago, my five year old daughter found a box of old magic tricks and so I have been honing my skills as of late. 🙂 My favorite magician of all time is Harry Houdini. Houdini was a master magician and was best known as an escape artist. He said that he could escape from any jail cell in the world in less than an hour and he succeeded on several occasions. Then a small town in the British Isles built a new jail they were extremely proud of and issued the challenge to Houdini to see if he could escape from one of their cells. Houdini loved the publicity and the money and so he accepted. By the time he arrived, excitement had grown throughout Great Britain. He rode into

Where Do Beliefs Come From?

The Last Supper was painted by the Italian artist, Leonardo DaVinci. It took seven years for him to complete the project. The figures representing the Twelve Apostles and Christ were painted from living persons. The live model for the painting of the figure of Christ was chosen first. When it was decided that DaVinci would paint this great picture, hundreds of young men were carefully viewed in an endeavor to find a face and personality exhibiting innocence and beauty, free from the scars and signs of dissipation caused by sin. Finally, after weeks of laborious search, a young man of nineteen years of age was selected as the model for the portrayal of Christ. For six months DaVinci worked on the production of this leading character of his famous painting. During the next six years, DaVinci continued his labors on the sublime work of art. One by one, fitting persons

The True Definition of Belief

Beliefs are the core of who we are, what we do, and the success that we acquire. In 1948, Claude M Bristol wrote a wonderful book entitled, The Magic of Believing. In his book he explains that there is one common strand woven throughout the many cultures and religions he investigated. All people, whether primitive or civilized, have shared a particular philosophy that is central to their culture. People of all ages have ascribed to the idea that if you believe that something will happen, it will take place. It is the power of belief that causes things to happen in our lives. Most people define beliefs as inward convictions, a feeling of certainty about what something means. They are what you hold dear and are rooted deeply within. A belief is both mental and emotional. It is imbedded in the mind and in the heart. Your beliefs will dictate
